A Gentle Beginning: Welcome to Mindful Moments

Starting a mindfulness journey doesn't require hours of meditation or a complete lifestyle change. It begins with one gentle moment of awareness. In this guide, you'll discover how small, intentional pauses can help you feel calmer, more present, and better equipped to navigate everyday life.

A Gentle Beginning: Welcome to Mindful Moments

Hello, and welcome to my blog. I’m so glad you’re here.

This space is dedicated to sharing simple, accessible ways to bring mindfulness, social-emotional learning, and authentic connection into everyday life. As I begin this journey, I’d like to share what inspired me to write a children’s book rooted in these core values.

Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, I found comfort and peace in the natural world around me. Although my family had very little compared with others, I discovered solace in the woods behind our tiny home, where I would walk among the trees and quietly watch the birds and bunnies.

My little dog, Fluffy, was my constant companion. In many ways, we practiced mindfulness together long before I studied meditation or counseling. Fluffy offered a steady kind of comfort and became, in my heart, an emotional support animal before I even had the language for that idea.

Years later, when I created Mindful Moments with Maude, I carried that same sense of gentle companionship into Maude’s character. She became the mindfulness teacher in the story—a calm, comforting presence children could connect with without feeling as though they were being instructed by an authority figure.

In the book, Addie arrives for a visit with her grandmother and feels frightened during a storm on her first night there. By morning, Maude offers comfort and gently guides her into the day through simple mindfulness practices—breathing, noticing body sensations, sitting on a cushion, and learning what it feels like to have a mind filled with a million thoughts.

Addie’s story was inspired, in part, by my own granddaughter, who often wanted to stay home when I visited her mom and little brother because she felt exhausted by the busyness of life. ā€œIn the olden days,ā€ she would say to me, trying to understand how much had changed since I was a little girl.

She and the real-life Maude grew up together, and both she and her brother loved Maude dearly. Her little brother will appear in the next book, along with the possibility of a new brother dog for Maude.

That same spirit of comfort, curiosity, gentle connection, and care for both children and adults is what I hope to carry into this blog.

My goal for this blog is to create a welcoming space where parents, teachers, counselors, and caregivers can find encouragement, practical ideas, and gentle reminders about emotional well-being. I hope to speak directly to the adults who care for children about the importance of taking time for themselves, honoring their own need for connection, and recognizing self-care as an essential part of caring well for others.

Through reflections from my own journey, resources connected to mindfulness and social-emotional learning, and meaningful ways to help children feel seen, supported, and calm, I want this blog to feel like an ongoing conversation—one that invites curiosity, connection, and small moments of peace in everyday life.

As this blog begins, I invite you to join me in exploring small, meaningful ways to nurture calm, connection, and emotional well-being—for children and ourselves. My hope is that each post offers something useful, comforting, or thought-provoking, whether it is a simple practice, a personal reflection, or a reminder that none of us has to do this work alone.

Thank you for being here at the beginning of this journey. I’m grateful to share it with you.
